I’m here with another bag review, and this time it’s on the brand new, just released, Mulberry Small Lana Top Handle Bag! This also comes in a bigger size, which is the standard. The Lana is a new, top handle bag with a twisted, contemporary lock. As soon as I saw it, I thought it was gorgeous! The most difficult part was choosing a colour to purchase as I ended up loving most of them!
The ultimate in day-to-night dressing, the Lana Top Handle is characterised by its sleek silhouette and structured upright handle. This elegant style showcases our new statement hardware, the Foundry Lock – a contemporary, Daliesque twist on the iconic Postman’s Lock.
As you can see, I ended up choosing the High Gloss Eggshell leather finish for this Mulberry Lana review and I’m glad I did! The black was just as stunning and classic, and the Sable brown was ideal for casual days, but there’s something about this creamy shade that made me fall in love! So, lets get to my Mulberry Lana bag review!
The Mulberry Lana New Design
The Lana is the brand new design from Mulberry and I think it’s probably going to end up being a classic for the brand, along with the Lily, Alexa and Bayswater. It’s really unique to Mulberry in that it was a really cool modern twist on their iconic Postman’s Lock, which is usually an oval shape. The new Foundry Lock hardware is in brass, but it’s a high shine brass, so it looks gold. It reminds me a lot of a cool pebble with the twisted shape of it – I think it’s really fun and pretty!
The shape of the bag is a classic box/rectangle design, featuring a top handle, and a detachable cross-body strap. The front of the bag opens with a flap that is connected to the twist lock, while the bottom of the bag is wider than the top, creating a really easy to use design. You can tell from the photos just what shape it is and how the design looks – it’s fabulous!
The Mulberry Small Lana Sizing
As this is the smaller version of the Lana, the dimensions are as follows:
- Height 16.5cm
- Width 23.5cm
- Depth 9.5cm
- Strap length Min 95.5 – Max 109.5
- Handle drop 7.5cm
- Strap drop 47cm
As you can see, it’s the perfect size for your everyday essentials! Since the internal pockets stretch out loads and it’s easy to access, you can fit so much in here! I can fit my phone, keys, lipsticks, digestive enzymes, card holder and more! It’s definitely the perfect size for my 5ft 4 frame too. If you do prefer something a little bit bigger though, I would recommend the regular size! For me though, the Mulberry Small Lana is perfect!
The Internal Compartments & Price
When I opened this bag up, as you probably saw if you watched the YouTube video review at the bottom of this post, I was very impressed with the internal compartments. It features a nappa lining, one internal slip pocket, one exterior slip pocket on the back, and three main compartment sections inside. These sections open up really wide as the leather is so soft and supple. Unlike some smaller bags that are really structured and boxy (Saint Laurent Solferino), making it hard to fit all of your items in, this Small Lana is like a Tardis on the inside!
The retail price for the Mulberry Small Lana Top Handle bag is £995 and that’s on par with the Lily and some of their other bags. I’d actually say this is a reasonable price given the Mulberry quality, heritage, and the fact that it’s an English designer brand, with cheaper prices. If this was made by Saint Laurent or Balenciaga, you’d be looking at upwards of £2000.
The High Gloss Leather
This Lana bag is made with a sophisticated High Gloss Leather, which is a smooth bovine leather that has been polished to achieve a high gloss finish. You can see from the video that in some areas it does crinkle up when it’s pressed, which is the sheen on top, and I’m not sure if this means it will wrinkle or crease up overtime, but it’s definitely a luxurious looking leather. It feels like it’s high quality and it looks expensive!
Mulberry Sustainability
Mulberry is committed to the responsible sourcing of all raw materials and to consistently improving the sustainability metrics of the brand’s supply chain. The leather for this product was sourced from their partner tannery in Italy. This tannery is a member of the Leather Working Group with a Gold Standard rating. Mulberry also have a carbon neutral range, a buy back scheme, and give you lifetime repairs. They are one of the most sustainable brands in England and I love them for that!
How To Wear The Mulberry Lana Top Handle Bag
Now there are multiple ways in which you can wear the Mulberry Small Lana bag as it comes with a detachable cross-body strap, so I showcased three different ways to wear this bag below in this review.
First up you can see that it’s being carried by the top handle – you can choose to unhook the strap and wear it without (which looks really sleep and sophisticated). The second way is worn as a cross-body version, like you would wear any regular bag this way.
Here is a close up shot of the bag when worn, so you can see how it sits. This is with the buckle pin in the middle of the 5 holes, which is where it came when I purchased it.
Then the third way is just as a shoulder bag, worn on one shoulder. You can of course choose to have the strap longer or shorter depending on your preference.
